Visiting the President James K. Polk State Historic Site
Scope: State historic site in Pineville, operated by North Carolina Historic Sites
James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, was born in 1795 in Mecklenburg County. The President James K. Polk State Historic Site in Pineville commemorates his birth and early life on land associated with his parents' farm. It is operated by North Carolina Historic Sites, part of the state's Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Pineville Living is an independent publication and has no affiliation with the site.

What the site interprets
The site tells the story of Polk's family, his early years in the Carolina backcountry and his later presidency, which included the U.S.–Mexican War and major territorial expansion. Like other plantation-era histories, it includes the lives of people enslaved by the Polk family; the official interpretation addresses that history.
Buildings on the grounds
The log house and outbuildings on the grounds are period structures relocated or reconstructed for interpretation. They are not the Polk family's original birthplace home, which does not survive. A visitor center holds exhibits.
